How this works (the honest bit).
Employment is sourced: the International Labour Organization counts roughly 3.5 billion people in work, which is about 43 per cent of everyone alive. We assume a working day of about eight hours, on five days in seven - that is a norm rather than a law, and much of the world works longer, shorter, or on different days. Those two assumptions give the average person 0.3 working days a day, which is what the figure above is built from. Work follows the local clock, so the number rises and falls with the working day in each country. Every figure on this page is a model built from population data, each country's local clock and the assumptions above. It is an estimate, it moves every second, and at least one of them is certainly true.
